When choosing a signature scent, many wonder about the difference between traditional Indian attar and modern eau de parfum. The answer lies in the foundation.
What is an Attar?
An attar is a 100% pure, natural, alcohol-free fragrance oil. In places like Kannauj, the perfume capital of India, attars have been distilled for over a millennium using the traditional deg-bhapka method. Botanical ingredients like Turkish rose, Kashmiri saffron, or Cambodian agarwood are steam-distilled directly into a base of pure sandalwood oil. Because there is no alcohol to evaporate quickly, an attar seeps into the skin and releases its aroma slowly throughout the day.
What is a Perfume?
Modern perfumes typically contain 80-90% alcohol. While this creates a large initial "cloud" or sillage when sprayed, the alcohol evaporates quickly. As a result, the scent often fades within a few hours.
